PAST PARTICIPLES
I hope that did not give you any problems - check back with me if it did ( judy.molyneux@polytechnic.bh). Now lets have a closer look at something mentioned above. We have remembered that in order to use the passive voice you need the verb to be in the form of a past participle. But are we all sure exactly what is meant by the term ' past participle' ?
The past participle shows past or completed actions or time. it is often called the 'ed' form of the verb because in regular verbs it is formed by adding 'ed' or 'd' to the base form . However is is also found in other ways for irregular verbs..................................
It can be used to form verb phrases as part of the present perfect tense - I have eaten Spanish food....
It can be used to form the passive - the cat was chased by the dog.....................................................
It can also be used as an adjective - he has a worried look on his face..................................................
Here is a small group of verbs - some are regular in form, and others are not.
Write out sentences using the past participle forms of the verbs, and try to use them in a variety of different sitiuations ( present perfect, passive and adjective). Be as creative and imaginative as you can in your sentences. Then send them on to your tutor - or to me - and we can check that your grammar and spelling are correct......
